Australians love eating potatoes and the thought of growing an unending supply is enough to convince even the brownthumbs to have go.

There are various potato bags on the market, but most of them are no where near the quality of these potato bags. We have purposefully made the geofelt extra thick and used UV stable double stitching all around. They are designed to be used for several years and in that time grow hundreds of fresh spuds!

Potential Problems

Seed potatoes are only available at selected times of the year because they dont store well when out of the ground. There is general talk amongst gardeners to always use certified seed potatoes so that they are guaranteed disease free. From personal experience and that of thousands of customers, this hasn't been totally necessary. It mainly applies if you are growing potatoes in the ground because the virus can live in your soil for multiple years. When you are growing in a potato bag you are isolating the crop and if you happen to get a bad crop, the contents can be discarded in the red rubbish bin and the bag washed with a bleach solution and then plant again.

'My potatoes are small' - When farmers grow potatoes they vary in size significantly, but when harvested are placed on sorting machines to separate them into similar size groups which is what we see the supermarket. This sets unrealistic expectations for customers growing spuds at home as they expect them to all be the same size like the 2kg bag at the supermarket! Instead they get a big mix from marble size to full size potatoes. They all taste good when you cook them up though.

'I planted 5 potatoes and got hardly any back!' - This is usually caused by overfertilising. Potatoes need hardly any fertiliser. Customers get excited and think adding extra fertiliser will make them grow faster and give a bigger yield. The exact opposite happens. The fertiliser is nitrogen based so pushes the plant to grow lots of leaves but very little roots.
We have experimented with using potting mix in the bottom quarter of the potato bag when sowing potatoes, and then swapping to Eucalyptus fine mulch to gradually back fill the rest of the bag. This method produced a great crop because the mulch had no fertiliser and actually sucks up some of the fertiliser (called nitrogen drawdown) as it starts to break down.

Retail Packaging

Potato bags come in a thin clear plastic bag with retail friendly full colour sticker with barcode and instructions.
